Yo La Tengo is an American indie rock band that was formed in Hoboken, New Jersey, in 1984. The band consists of Ira Kaplan (vocals, guitar, piano), Georgia Hubley (vocals, drums, piano), and James McNew (bass, vocals).

The band’s name comes from a Spanish baseball phrase that means “I have it!” which was often shouted by outfielders when catching a fly ball. Yo La Tengo began as a quartet, with Kaplan and Hubley joined by Dave Schramm on guitar and Dave Rick on bass. However, Schramm and Rick left the band shortly after its formation, leaving Kaplan and Hubley to continue as a duo.

In 1986, Yo La Tengo released its debut album, “Ride the Tiger,” which was a mix of original songs and covers. The band continued to release albums throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, including “New Wave Hot Dogs” (1987), “President Yo La Tengo” (1989), and “May I Sing with Me” (1992).

It wasn’t until the release of their eighth studio album, “I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One” in 1997, that Yo La Tengo achieved critical acclaim and commercial success. The album showcased the band’s diverse range of influences and musical styles, including indie rock, shoegaze, and experimental music.

Since then, Yo La Tengo has continued to release critically acclaimed albums, including “And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out” (2000), “Summer Sun” (2003), “I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass” (2006), and “Fade” (2013).

In addition to their recording career, Yo La Tengo is also known for their dynamic live performances, which often feature extended improvisational jams and cover songs. The band has also collaborated with a number of other artists, including Jad Fair, Susie Ibarra, and Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo.
